UN plea for EU peacekeepers

"UN plea for European peacekeepers"

This is going to reveal the difference between America and Europe; excluding Britain. I believe this is a paper tiger approach and the Hezbollah will have there way with the life of Lebanon. With the help of the NYT many in America will think everything will be ok because the Hezbollah are just misunderstood, well intentioned terrorists that only want what is best for the Middle East. What do you think?

Is this Heaven? No, this is Science! (My Review of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design at Amazon.com)

Below is a review of Jonathan Wells's new book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design I posted at Amazon.com:

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design was a fun, quick read. I should state up front that I work at the Discovery Institute, where the author Jonathan Wells is a Senior Fellow. I'm not getting paid extra to write this review--in fact it's late, I'm hungry, and I want to leave the office and go home as I write this. Nonetheless, I feel it's only fair for the sake of disclosure and honesty that I say who I am as a reviewer.

Jonathan Wells will get called a lot of names for writing this book. In fact, look at the other reviews---name calling and personal attacks have already begun! But as Wells recounts in chapters 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 16, a number of pro-intelligent design faculty have been similarly persecuted because they were sympathetic to intelligent design (ID). So if you're a curious [...]browser wondering why critical reviewers engage in so much personal attack and name calling against Jonathan Wells, you'll understand these tactics completely after you read the documentation in Well's book.

Forced Exit: Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide, and the New Duty To Die

With proponents of assisted suicide achieving more than anyone imagined possible even ten years ago Discovery Institute is proud to announce that Spence Publishing has recently released a revised and updated version of Forced Exit: Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide, and the New Duty To Die by nationally acclaimed bioethicist and senior fellow Wesley J. Smith. This week we offer a short review of the book.

Smith expertly pierces through the emotionalism, fear mongering, and euphemisms that are the standard fare of the assisted suicide movement to expose attempts to strip the sick and disabled of their dignity. Far from a compassionate answer to suffering, assisted suicide is a new form of oppression. Forced Exit offers chilling evidence of just how powerful and dangerous the death culture in America has become.

Pope Leads Talks on Evolution: Dallas Morning News

Pope to lead talks on evolutionDallas Morning News (subscription) - TX,USA... XVI will lead a seminar next month examining Charles Darwin's theory of ... to renew the debate between Catholic supporters of "intelligent design" – the notion ... (and some more I couldn't bare to leave out)

The current pope has at times appeared to endorse intelligent design. Last November, he described the world as an "intelligent project." But in January, an editorial in L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's official newspaper, questioned the validity of intelligent design and reaffirmed Catholicism's support for evolution.
The Rev. George Coyne, an astronomer who heads the Vatican Observatory, is a vocal opponent of intelligent design. He describes support for the notion as a "religious movement" rather than science.
The Rev. Stephan Horn, 71, a theologian who coordinates the annual meetings, described them as free-flowing. Benedict, he said, presides as "the mentor of a group of students" rather than as pope.
"He doesn't impose his ideas. ... He doesn't try to have the last word," Father Horn said.

There is more but I'll let you go to the article. It is fairly written. Hat Tip: Dallas Morning News for good reporting.

If you were there with the students . . . what would you have to say?

News from Washington S 3711 Senator Bill Nelson Exchange

Senator Bob Nelson is my Senator. I have sent this to show the level of communication that is available. I responded to this letter concerning the "Protection of Our Shores" as follows:
------ My Letter -----
If I understand bill S. 3711 correctly you want to protect our shores at the expense of foregoing a the drilling for a natural resource, oil. Oil is important for all Americans. It seems you favor holding withholding oil for the sake of protecting our shoreline from the possibility of an oil spill. Please consider the following:
  1. More oil is dumped in sewers and in the ground by backyard mechanics in one year than was spill by the Valdez. Joe citizen is a careless conservationist.
  2. The geopolitical position of America is adversely affected by the need for oil from other countries. Working from a weak position because of the need for oil from others is not a good position to be in for America, including Florida.
  3. Protecting shoreline from the possibility of an oil spill deprives America and Florida to of a stable supply of oil.
  4. Technology and prevention of oil spills by the oil drilling industry has improved therefore filibustering an S. 3711 amendment for Florida shoreline oil drilling verges on shoreline scrupulosity.
Give oil and the country a chance. Allow America to benefit for Florida Shoreline Oil.

Thank your for sharing with me, a voter. I hope this exchange is constructive.

Sincerely,
David Belfort

Dear Fellow Floridians:

The Senate has just wrapped up a busy summer session, and I wanted to give you a summary before we start up again in September.

Extending Our Sales Tax Deduction
In 2004, Congress decided to allow residents of states that do not levy income tax—like Florida—to deduct state sales tax from their federal income taxes for two years. But the deduction expired last December 31, and an attempt to revive it as part of a bill that also contained an increase in the minimum wage and a reduction of the estate tax failed in the Senate.

But hold on to your sales tax records for high-priced items, because I am fighting to have the sales tax deduction revived and made retroactive for 2006. I sent this letter to Majority Leader Frist, and am cosponsoring legislation with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison from Texas to reinstate this tax break. This deduction is too important for working families to let it slip away.

Protection for Our Shores
After receiving assurances from Senate leaders that any offshore drilling compromise with the House will include – in the words of Majority Leader Bill Frist – "adequate protections to the State of Florida," I decided to support S. 3711, the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006.

The bill includes a 125-mile no-drilling zone off Florida's Panhandle through 2022, and a 235-mile no-drilling zone off much of Florida's Gulf coast, also through 2022. Senator Martinez and I fought hard to secure these protections.

The House, on the other hand, passed a markedly different bill that allows drilling off all coastal states as close as three miles from shore if a state legislature agrees to it.

But Democratic Leader Reid assured me that he will join me in a filibuster if there are any changes to the Florida portion of the bill when it comes back from negotiations with the House.

Homeland Security
I supported measures to reform the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and provide for the safety of pets and service animals during emergencies. I also supported funding to give first responders the tools they need to protect public safety.

Other Votes
Several of the votes in the Senate this summer have been on issues that divide not just Congress, but our state and nation. These votes always generate a lot of phone calls, e-mails, and letters from constituents, all of which I consider carefully when deciding how to vote.

Honoring a Civil Rights Advocate
I am glad to report that the Senate approved my bill to rename the federal courthouse in Jacksonville after the late Judge John Milton Bryan Simpson. Judge Simpson's judicial decisions helped desegregate area schools, city pools, golf courses and the city zoo. He was key to the struggle for civil rights--the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. once appeared before him and won the reversal of a ban on nighttime civil rights marching in St. Augustine. The U.S. House of Representatives approved an identical bill last year, sponsored by Representative Corrine Brown. The measure now awaits President Bush's signature.

Sincerely,

Bill Nelson

U.S. Senator

Excellent breakdown on the UN effort in Lebanon

The United Nations' Failed Peacekeeping in Lebanon

Context

·         There is a broad consensus that an end to the hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel requires:

*the complete disarmament of Hezbollah, as mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559, adopted on September 2, 2004; and

          * an effective peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon to separate Hezbollah from the border and prevent it from firing rockets into Israel.

·         Many lead actors for the peacekeeping force have been proposed, including the United Nations, NATO, a force provided by regional states, and the Lebanese army.

·         The Lebanese government, backed by the Arab League, has endorsed a 7-point plan that includes extensive UN involvement.

·         The current proposal before the Security Council is "for a progressive Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory to go simultaneously with the deployment of the Lebanese army backed by reinforced UN peacekeepers."

Basing any peace settlement on the involvement of UN personnel is fraught with risks, mostly because the UN, and particularly its Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, has a poor track record at preventing terrorism since its mandate began in 1978, and has been unwilling to disarm Hezbollah, in spite of UN Security Council Resolution 1559.

·         The lessons from UNIFIL's failure must be examined and absorbed by any future peacekeeping effort in Lebanon.

There is more to read here.  It is clear and detailed history up to the present situation.  A good read.  What do you think?
